2x(x+1) + k = x

2x^2 + 2x - x + k = 0

2x^2 + x + k = 0

a = 2;    b = 1;    c = k

Δ = b^2 - 4ac < 0

(1^2) - 4(1)(k) < 0

4k > 1

k > 1/4
