There are many programs out there so one needs to make sure that they have a good strategy for teaching phonics. The strategies has to tick all the boxes and here are some of the aspects that good reading instruction:

  1. Phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, and concepts of print

  2. The alphabetic code: Phonics and decoding

  3. Fluent, automatic reading of text

  4. Vocabulary

  5. Text comprehension

  6. Written expression

  7. Spelling and handwriting

  8. Screening and continuous assessment to inform instruction

  9. Motivating children to read and developing their literacy horizons
