Entrepreneurs require an environment that allows entrepreneurial thinking and activity to thrive. A country that has an entrepreneurial culture inspires entrepreneurial activity which is sustained by a sound regulatory environment. Analyzing the culture in South Africa using Hofstede's culture framework, South Africa encourages free thought through individualism but has a high power distance that results in red-tape processes and access to decision-makers. This creates a disconnection between entrepreneurial intentions and motivations to start a business and the ability to sustain a business by relying on the under-developed entrepreneurial ecosystem in South Africa.
