Ron takes his car out for a joy ride and travels 400 meters north.  He then travels 100 meters east and picks up his buddy Chris.  They then stop at a 7-11 which is 200 meters south from Chris’s house.  If the total trip takes 10 minutes, determine the average velocity of Ron’s car. (Draw a picture!)

North and East = +         South and West = -

Vav = V1 + V2 + ... + Vn / t1 + t2 + ... + tn

       = 400 + 100 - 200 / (10 * 60)

       = 0.5 m/s

R^2= X^2+Y^2

=(100)^2+(400)^2

= Square root= 170000

= 412.31 m

R^2= X^2+ Y^2

= (100)^2+ (200)^2

= Square root= 50000

= 223.61 m

V= displacement/time

= 412.31+ 223.61/ 10*60

= 1.06 m/s
