If discrimination is the objective of machine learning models, then why are activists fighting for fair algorithms?

Example: Binary logistic regression, is one of the most used models to predict whether a person belongs to a certain group or not. The technique is applauded for its ability to successfully discriminate, for instance, in a bank, they want to know if someone can pay for a loan or not.
