Emily hits 60% of her free throws in basketball games. She had 25 free throws in last week’s game. Use this information to answer the next two questions.

  1. What is the average number of hits? (Hint: Expected value is given by n times p)
  2. What is the standard deviation of Emily’s hit ? (Hint: The standard deviation is $\sqrt{npq}$)

Best answer
1.

$n$, number of trials = 25,

$p$, probability of success,

$q$, probability of failure
$p = 60% = 0.6$ therefore

$q = 1 - 0.6 = 0.4$
$\text{Hits} = n \times p = 25 \times 0.6 =  15$ Successful throws

2. $s$, Square root of $n \times p \times q$

        $= \sqrt{25 \times 0.6 \times 0.4}$

        $=\sqrt{6}$

        $= 2.45$
