There are several economic sectors that contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, including the energy, transportation, industrial, and agriculture sectors.
However, the sector that emits the largest percentage of greenhouse gases globally is the energy sector, which includes the production, transportation, and consumption of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
According to the International Energy Agency, the energy sector was responsible for around two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2019. Within the energy sector, the electricity and heat generation subsector is the largest contributor, followed by the manufacturing, construction, and transportation subsectors.
