Generally, the expected value and mean have different applications in the probability and statistics theory, although they both give the average value, specifically the ratio of sum of the frequencies and total values in the distribution.

Difference: The mean value is calculated for the values in a data set while the expected value is used for the random variables (discrete or continuous).
