An absolute value is always a positive number, absolute value refers to the distance of a number from 0.

So the distance from zero of $2$ and $-2$ is equal i.e.

$|-2| = |2| = 2$

Some mathematicians explain it as only looking at the magnitude (number of steps from zero) component of the number and ignoring the sign (direction from zero).
