TIA was established as a schedule public entity in terms of the Public Finance Management Act (Act 29 of 1999, as amended). Its mandate is derived from the provisions of the Technology Innovation Agency Act (Act 26 of 2008), read together with sections 1923 of the Science and Technology Laws Amendment Act (Act 7 of 2014) which establishes TIA as an agency to promote the development and exploitation, in the public interest, of discoveries, inventions, innovations and improvements. TIA's objective is to support the state in stimulating and intensifying technological innovation to improve economic growth and quality of life for all South Africans by developing and exploiting technological innovations.
