(x^2) - 4x - 96 = 0

Using the quadratic formula gives:

x = ((-(-4)) ± (((-4)^2) - (4)(1)(-96))) / ((2)(1) = (4 ± √(16 + 384))/2 = (4 ± √400)/2 = (4 ± 20)/2 = 12 or -8

Therefore the larger solution is x = 12
