Let the ages of Daniel and Alex be d and a, respectively

(d - 5) = 2 (a - 5)        (i)

d + a = 14                    (ii)

(i) simplifies to:     d - 5 = 2a - 10

d = 2a - 5

implying that:

2a - 5 + a = 14

3a = 19

a = (19/3)

d = (2*(19/3))-5 = (38/3) - 5 = (23/3)

Therefore Daniel is 7 years 8 months old

Alex is 6 years 4 months old
