Linear equations are written in the form \(y = mx + c\) where \(y\) is the dependent variable; \(m\) is the gradient/slope; \(x\) is the independent variable and \(c\) is the \(y\)-intercept.

The biggest power of the independent variable, \(x\) is 1, which implies that all linear equations are of order 1. These equations can be represented graphically with a straight line, hence the name linear equation.
