let x=father's age, y=son's age

x=4y

and in 6 years time, (xt6)+(y+6)=57, then solve simultaneous equations

x=4y and x+y+12=57

4y+y+12=57

5y =45

x=9

y=9/4

age ratio is 4:1, 4/5 x 45 =  36 years old for father and 45-36= 9 years old for son
