It is the analysis to determine the appropriate sample size such that the probability of making a type 1 or type 2 error in rejecting or failing to reject a null hypothesis will be acceptable for a given set of circumstances.

In other words, it aims to estimate the number of observations/sample size you need to have a good chance of detecting the effect that you are seeking. Power analysis informs us on whether an experiment is worth doing or not.
