Earthworms or other microorganisms feed on decaying organic compounds and break them(decompose) down to nutrients for plants to use.  Insects like bees or butterflies pollinate flowers and improve yield.
Termites, ants or earthworms burrow into the soil and increase the water flow through the soil(soil aeration).
