The primary objective of aviation security is to assure the protection and safety of passengers, crew, ground personnel, the general public, aircraft and facilities of an airport serving civil aviation, against acts of unlawful interference perpetrated on the ground or in flight. This is carried out through a combination of measures and the marshalling of various human and material resources at international, national and airport levels.
To meet this primary objective, the Aviation Security Department has a legal structure in terms of Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations (SI 200A of 2019), with clearly defined responsibilities and methods of implementation. The department is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive policy on aviation security. The department implements a standardised level of aviation security through measures that meet ICAO Annex 17-Security Standards
